Recently an experienced wine cellar cooling contractor and builder in Fort Meyers, Florida asked us, “Can the DC-1 thermostat you supply with your wine cellar refrigeration equipment be replaced with different digital controls? I only use an ‘XXXXX’ on all my jobs. I know it, and my techs are very familiar with it.”

Another similar question we have heard before is, “My client’s home has a Home Monitoring System. Can I use that instead of your Digital Controllers?”

The answer for both is a ‘QUALIFIED’ yes….

There are several other high quality thermostats on the market compatible with our system. Also, more and more homes have Home Monitoring systems with thermostatic controls incorporated. Some of these can also do a great job of centrally monitoring home wine cellar temperatures.

However, few can work as the primary operation control properly.

There are critical operation and run-time cycles pre-programmed into our controller. Without these parameters US Cellars cannot guarantee the equipment will perform as designed. IF the replacement system operates with a temperature differential of 1 °F – 10 °F it is compatible and can be used.

Please see the Tech Page Wine Cellar Cooling “Controller Logic” for more information. If you are still unsure you can ask a wine cellar cooling technical question by completing the Notes field on our contact form.

Or, as always, you can simply give us a call at +1 (562) 513-3017.

Special thanks to our wine cellar cooling equipment dealer in Fort Meyers, Florida for asking this question!

Anyone who buys active wear these days is familiar with the phrase “moisture wicking”. What does that have to do with Wine Cellar Cooling Units, we hear you ask?

Unlike cooling systems in wine cellars, modern fabrics can pull moisture off the skin, pass it through the clothing, and dry it quickly. It’s a certainly great improvement to comfort and the effectiveness of the clothing in sports and extreme conditions.

Playing with the physics of a wine cellar does just the opposite. A custom wine cellar can actually promote moisture migration, this effect is actively compounded by the addition of wine cellar refrigeration equipment. This is why protections like a vapor barrier are vital and not just precautionary.

Mold and mildew are a possibility in any basement. Wine cellar cooling units installed in custom wine cellars which have not been constructed properly dramatically increases those odds.

We were recently working with a wine cellar builder in the New England area in Massachusetts. In this case contractor’s project was to add a HS (High Static) Wine Cellar Cooling System to a finished room in a basement that has been serving as a wine cellar for several years. The average temperature in the room is just a little higher than the customer wants. The customer is happy with the look of the room as it is. He does not mind the investment of adding refrigeration equipment but is resistant to the expense of adding a vapor barrier.

This is the point the builder / contractor needs to become 1 part salesman, 2 parts expert.

The customer wants their wine cellar builder to be expert, so the sales part should be simple, right?

Not really. To sell the customer on the complete idea turned out to be challenging. Should the builder just do what the client wants, install the cooling system without a vapor barrier? Then when problems arise down the road they can at least say “well, we told you so”!

Mold and moisture problems build up slowly over time, look ugly, do not smell good and are difficult to get rid of.

On the other hand, doing the job correctly and including critical details the customer doesn’t think they want but still giving him the finished product can clearly take some finesse.

The customer may not understand why details like a vapor barrier are important. Therefore it is not valuable to him. This is why being “perceived” as an expert is doubly important. The best way to prove to yourself or others you are an expert is to be able to explain the topic in understandable and relevant terms to someone else. The customer needs reassurance that he is making the right choice without feeling up-sold.

Need help with issues like this? Wine Cellar Refrigeration Systems are always here to help you. Simply call us at +1 (562) 513-3017 or complete a wine cellar cooling simple contact request form and we will be happy to contact you.

We will keep adding relevant topics to our wine cellar cooling technical pages and on our YouTube Channel. Making them your go-to place for reference data and sales support. We are also just a phone call away for direct support.

What do wine cellar cooling systems in New England, Massachusetts have in common with “Active Wear“? The physics of wine cellar cooling units – The answer is… Nothing, they are opposites!

More than a few of the wine cellar cooling design ideas we have been working on lately have been pushing the ordinary WINE CELLAR aesthetic to new levels. Some of them are truly brilliant. However, I am not talking about those this time.

Not so smart usage of Wine Cellar Cooling Units

Wine Cellar Cooling; Who cares about the temperature?

For example, three recent but very different custom wine cellar cooling systems design requests from three very different parts of the USA, California, Florida & Washington State have all wanted to incorporate wine tasting areas inside the cellar. Each custom wine cellar was proposed to hold 1,000 bottles or less in a fairly large room and therefore needed wine cellar refrigeration units capable and designed to support these wine room designs.

1. 500 bottle capacity wine racking, a couch, TV, and a FIRE PLACE!
2. 800 bottle capacity wine racking with a formal dining area!
3. 1,000 bottle capacity wine racking with a wet bar and seating for twelve people!

Wine Cellar Cooling Systems Design, our thoughts…

Let’s think about this for a moment. Do you enjoy when a restaurant is so chilly you need to send your spouse to the car for your sweater? We certainly don’t! We understand wanting to be in view of your prized fine wine collection, we understand that entertaining and showing it off is part of the purpose of a wine cellar. After all you have probably spent a pretty penny getting your custom wine cellar just perfect.

Now ask yourself this. “will you also have a coat check, or just loan out parkas?” Unless you are going for a realistic Aspen slopes feel, honestly it’s just too cold to be comfortable at 55°.

Some solutions we have suggested to make these designs more practical include:

Custom built wine cabinets using CC (Cabinet & Closet wine Cooling units)

or LPQ (Low Profile-Quiet wine cellar cooling units)

or even adding a dual pane glass wall with a ducted HS (High Static wine cellar cooling system).

Wine Party - Wine Cellar Cooling Systems Design

Wine Cellar Cooling Systems Design, What are the benefits?

The reduced cost for wine cellar refrigeration equipment will help to off-set the increased cost of building the containment features.

You pay for construction ONCE. You pay utilities MONTHLY.

What if your necessary use for the larger space changes over time? Eventually you may decide it is too cold to hang out in the cellar. You may take up a new hobby or start working from home and need to multipurpose the huge space you’ve set aside.

It’s time to sell your home… While having a gorgeous home wine cellar can certainly boost your property value, if it is arranged in a way the can become “dated” it may ultimately be a challenge.

Your wine cellar and wine collection is displayed in a way that is ideal for entertainment purposes. In other words, your wine cellar cooling system refrigerates your wine and not your guests!

Wine Cellar Specialists, one of our favorite wine cellar cooling dealers and experts in custom wine cellar design just completed another project using one of our wine cellar refrigeration units in Texas. The job, The Dann Wine Cellar, was built with one of our the RM (Rack Mount) 2600 units to provide refrigerated air to the climate controlled wine cellar. The wine cooling unit itself was hidden from view in the racking with an attractive purpose built wooded grill.

Wine Cellar Specialists were very smart, designing into the custom wine cellar, a door that has a special mechanism in the bottom that seals the room but retracts on opening. This makes for an excellent seal without wear and tear reducing efficiency over time.

See the Wine Cellar Specialists video all about the Texas project.

Upon doing a heat load calculation to determine the BTUs necessary to cool the wine room, a 6600 Twin evaporator unit was recommended. To make this calculation, we took into consideration the R-value of the insulation in the walls, floor and ceiling, the size of the room, the fact that 2 of the walls are exterior walls, and that a solid door is being used. Depending on the BTU needed and the configuration of the room, it is sometimes better to use twin evaporators than a single evaporator for greater efficiency.
